The embryonic discontinuity and the unity of the person in the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Some impacts on current bioethics

The human embryo in legislation has no defined status. As for its status in ethical debates, no consensus has been reached between the various parties of the different bioethical currents. What is certain is that in most legislations, in order to circumvent ethical debates, base their arguments above all on scientific data. As a result, ethics is limited to the scientific aspect. However, it is urgent to remember that bioethics does not stop solely at the scientific or sociological aspect. Particularly, the Personalist Bioethics approach invite us to consider the human  being, including the embryo, in its meta-ontological aspect. The personalist vision is based on the notion of the “person” described by Saint Thomas Aquinas. Could the latter provide answers to the ethical dilemmas of our days? This article aims to answer this question by analyzing the issue of embryonic discontinuity and the unity of the person from a meta-ontological reflection.

Post and Transhumans

A topic of  discussion in recent years is the transhumanist proposal in bioethics. In his work, Dr. Caleb Olvera presents the thesis on the modification of  the concept of  human being throughout history and the impossibility of  finding an essence in “the human”. As the author explains in the presentation, his work is made up of  two main texts, the first derived from an interview, which is edited for this publication, and the second derived from a piece written for a collection on issues related to culture. As the author reflects, his objective is to bring together these two texts “given that they maintain a thematic axis in what is man and his relationship with culture, with the design of  himself  through technology and institutions”

The experience of  the last centuries has taught us that all speculation about the future is uncertain, exaggerated in some things and very blind in others. Jules Verne’s successes are well known, but his failed predictions are not so well known. In our time, flying cars did not arrive, but the Internet did; a technology of  military origin that connected a few universities in the sixties in the USA and revolutionized the way we shop, communicate and, without exaggeration, changed our way of  life.
